Summary
Baskerville-Donovan, Inc. is hiring an Instrument Operator to join our Survey team in our Panama City and Pensacola offices. Under the direction of the Crew Chief, this position sets up the instruments and equipment associated with surveying land and prepares the job site for a survey.
The different type of projects our survey team may work on varies from Right-of-Way & Design Surveys, Geodetic/Control Surveys, Large Scale Commercial & Residential Developments, Hydrographic Surveys, Alta/ACSM Land Title Surveys, and Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE). BDI uses GPS (Global Positioning System) technology in the regular execution of surveys to provide our customers with the most accurate and cost-effective products and services.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Proven skills as an Instrument Operator and Rodman. Ability to fulfill these roles as needed on a crew.
- Supervises a survey crew for all types of small, moderate and large-scale surveys.
- Ensures that crew members are utilizing safe practices in accordance with OSHA and BDI policy.
- Applies expert and current knowledge of survey minimum technical standards. (requirements for measurement and redundancy) for land survey as specified by regulatory bodies)
- Proficient in reading plans and in survey calculations.
- Composes field notes that are detailed, accurate, comprehensive, legible and mitigate liability.
- Performs historical research for projects including research of deeds, related records, maps previous survey, flood zones, etc.
- Coordinates with utility companies to identify location of various utilities.
- Coordinates with contractors to identify customer needs and develop job plans.
- Acts as a field project manager, proficiently multi-tasking to ensure the performance of all job tasks on all crews.
- Applies knowledge of CAD stands to perform quality control on survey CAD drawings.

- Optimizes productivity by proactive planning for efficiency and by keeping the job going in the face of obstacles such as equipment issues or other unknown conditions that may arise.
- Consistently delivers high profitability, quality and production through sound management of crews.
- Fully accountable for the accuracy, production and profitability of the crew.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma/GED
- Two (2) years Crew Chief experience
- Excellent problem-solving skills and understanding of mapping concepts.
- Self-motivated with good time management and ability to work outdoors and walk as needed.
- Qualified driver’s license and safe driving record
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Maintains current knowledge of regulations regarding land survey and OSHA.
- Good mathematical skills.
- Experience with field data collection software.
- Knowledge of GPS receivers and software.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate well with a variety of people.
- Effective problem solving and negotiating techniques.
- Ability to work as a team member.
