BDI was selected for the Settlers Colony and Villa Venyce stormwater retrofit projects in Gulf Breeze, Florida. BDI provided survey, design, and construction inspection services for the Settlers Colony – South Area project that was partially funded through FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP)
BDI coordinated with Settlers Colony and Villa Venyce residents, as well as with local utility providers, throughout the project. Public involvement included message boards, a project website with a comment section for residents, a project hotline to BDI, and public information meetings.
The stormwater collection and conveyance systems were divided up and designed to “bleed off” collected stormwater runoff to multiple outfalls. Close coordination with residents adjacent to available easements were necessary for the planning and construction of outfall structures. Off-line proprietary treatment units were installed throughout the systems to collect trash, sediment, and other debris from the stormwater flows prior to discharge into the canal system.
Over 300 homes in the Settlers Colony and Villa Venyce areas, including more than 50 homes within the Settlers Colony – South Area, now have increased protection from flooding due to the new collection and conveyance systems.
